If you are even a passing listener of Carnatic music, you are sure to have heard of the Trinity, the revered composers who set the base for most of the compositions that are rendered today (and for the last several decades) on stage in Carnatic music.
Śri Muttuswāmi Dīkṣitar, Śri Tyagaraja and Śri Śyāmā Śāstri are known as the Trinity of Carnatic Music. Decades after their passing, their compositions continue to be rendered with the same fervour, and rasikas and students continue to analyse their kṛtis. However, how many can claim a relationship that traces back directly to one of the Trinity?
This year, in the month of March, the Carnatic music world is celebrating the 250th birth anniversary of the youngest of the trinity – Śri Muttuswāmi Dīkṣitar. Through my Gurus, I am fortunate to be able to belong to a śiṣya-parampara (teacher-student lineage) that traces right back to the great composer. The chart below summarises this relationship succinctly.
